In testing the film they received the expected feedback from a few that once Ray Wise showed up on screen playing a character it "took them out of the movie as at that point they realized the film wasn't in fact real." The initial concept for the film came from fan mail sent by Alex Pardee that purported to tell the true history of a character Green had created, Victor Crowley. Up The Marrow (2015) - Dread Central - dreadcentral.com. “I wanted to take [the Brockie footage] out, and the team around me was like, ‘Why would you rob his fans of seeing that last thing of him on camera?’” says Green.
“Will Barratt was the only one who read the whole script and knew everything,” says the director. In Digging Up the Marrow (released to theaters and on VOD and iTunes, Feb. 20), Ray Wise (Twin Peaks) plays a retired cop who believes monsters live just below the surface of the earth…
Simon Abrams of RogerEbert.com rated it 1.5/4 stars and wrote, "Digging Up the Marrow is a decent idea, but beyond some fun creature effects, and a surprisingly grounded performance from character actor Ray Wise, the film just sits there. Nearly half a century has passed since Roger Patterson captured a few seconds of an alleged Bigfoot in the Pacific Northwest, and people are still making obsessive YouTube videos analyzing the creature’s compliant gait, and trying to calculate its height based on the known height of nearby trees. Both events caused him to question the project, and he was tempted to remove their scenes. 20 actors who played multiple roles on the same show, The 10 best (and 5 worst) TV shows of 2017. met Ray Wise, Adam Green en Will Barratt. Green first had the idea for Digging Up the Marrow in 2010, after a fan sent a letter to his production company’s office claiming that Victor Crowley—the Kane Hodder-played Louisiana swamp-dwelling killer from Hatchet and its two sequels—was an actual person. That exasperated, knowing wink to viewers is a throw-away gag, but it also says more about Green's ambitions (or lack thereof) than he realizes. Other cameras capture monsters, and later reveals that Dekker visits often and communicates, or feeds, one of the monsters at the Marrow. Almost no CGI was used in the film, to help ensure the artist renderings of the monsters, done by Alex Pardee, were kept true to form. Director Adam Green has hailed Fright Fest as his "favorite film festival on the planet" and this will mark the second time that he has chosen to world premiere one of his films at the festival and his 8th time attending the festival with one of his films. Digging up the Marrow premiered at the London FrightFest Film Festival on August 23, 2014. I already knew Alex’s artwork, I just didn’t know what he looked like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-ybIg2X49w. Filmmaker Adam Green begins a documentary about artwork that features monsters. “There’s a little bit of visual effects that were added but the monsters you see are practical,” says the director. Barratt was the only actor who read the entire script. The director says that now, even the “real” parts of the film seem fictitious: “So much has changed.”. At the Los Angeles premiere of the film, Green candidly addressed the crowd and said that though he and his team had expected the film to initially receive a polarizing response given the fact that they appear in the film as themselves and that they used their real lives as the subject matter for which they set the film's fantastical story in, he was surprised to see just how well received the film actually was.
Around the same time, Green separated from his wife. The shooting crew of Green and his cameraman wait at the Marrow's entrance; a dug-up hole in the cemetery in the woods.
"The fun of this film is that it uniquely blends a fantasy world of monsters with a very real world", said Green in MovieMaker Magazine. Though "Marrow" is set in a real life setting and told in as authentic of a manner as possible to suspend audiences' disbelief, at it's core the film is a monster movie that delivers fantastical creatures on screen and no one would ever think the film was in fact real anyway, so the filmmakers opted to avoid the viewing experience becoming all about "a hoax" and instead chose to remind audiences right up front that they are watching a fictional scripted narrative which proved to be the right decision. Green's creative laziness also extends to his film's best idea: Green recognizes himself in Decker's quixotic obsession with monsters. Then Green stops clearing his throat, and gets to his film's subject: out of all of Green's fan mail, the most exciting correspondence he's received came from William Decker (Wise), an eccentric retired Boston police officer who claims to have seen real monsters.
" Wes Greene of Slant Magazine rated it 2/4 stars and said that it "ultimately becomes the shopworn horror story that Green purports to upend with plenty of self-aware snark". Green's got an annoying habit of making his character more annoying than they need to be. Green finished principal photography in 2013 and, in December of that year, screened an early cut of Marrow at the Butt-Numb-A-Thon in Austin, TX., an annual mini-festival hosted by Ain’t It Cool News founder Harry Knowles. “What’s really cool is, [for] the DVD and Blu-ray, our sculptor, Greg Aronowitz made this 30-minute documentary about the making of the monsters, with all this footage that I didn’t even know these guys had shot,” he continues. In the hope of capturing them on film, he seeks out the help of Green, director of the 2006 slasher movie Hatchet, who plays himself.
